Paintworks interpretive panels

Crest Nicholson

Collaborating with property developers Crest Nicholson we designed interpretive panels for Paintworks’ creative quarter next to Bristol’s Bath Road. The boards highlight the national conservation importance of this unique area which combines live/work spaces, studios and residential lofts in converted industrial buildings.

Paintworks was developed by Verve properties, who transformed a derelict industrial complex into a thriving creative community. Crest Nicholson joined forces with Verve to develop new-build homes as part of Phase 3 of the development. The panels are positioned opposite this latest development. Based on a lectern style they use the existing infrastructure, hanging from barrier rails with coloured acrylic panels bonded to each side. These reflect and reference the materials used by Crest Nicholson on the apartment balconies.

The designs echo the vibrant nature of Paintworks, using bright colours that match the site’s branding. The four panels feature stories and information about the history, culture, nature and conservation relevant to the area. The Bristol Avon & Navigation panel looks at the challenges of the tidal river and the development of the Floating Harbour and Feeder canal. While A Changing Landscape shows the impact of industry on the area and the history of Colthurst & Harding, the paint manufacturers originally based at the site. These boards use a range of media, including nineteenth century illustrations, archive photographs, maps and paintings.

As well as panels focused on history, the Nature and Conservation panel is filled with stories about rare species found in the area. And The Creative Quarter features information and images from some of Paintworks’ impressive artists and organisations including the Royal Photographic Society, The Martin Parr Foundation and artists Beth Carter and Luke Jerram. The panels will hopefully keep locals and visitors informed of the unique culture, heritage and nature of the site for a few years to come.
