Engineering library mural

University of Bristol, Faculty of Engineering

Ever wondered what Charles Dickens would have written if he had started out as an engineer? Or if Virginia Woolf had had a side line in constructing sustainable buildings? Then check out a new mural we designed for The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bristol.

As part of a new collaborative workspace for students located below the Engineering library, we were briefed with the task of brightening up the space by designing a mural for a wall measuring 12 square meters. The librarians provided us with 40 influential books that we were to reference within the mural.

Rather than create photorealistic copies of the books (because that would’ve been easy), we created supersized, textured illustrations using a limited palette of six colours from the University brand book. To increase student engagement with the mural we also included ten of our own book titles, which punned classic literary works such as ‘Great Excavations’ by C.Dickens and ‘Conduct and Conductivity’ by J.Austin. Can you spot the other puns?
